Retail Inflows on Binance hit a multi-year low : The disappearance of Retail
Retail inflows on Binance have hit a multi-year low. Since 2018, the average deposits from these small investors on the platform with the largest volumes have done nothing but decline. Today, the 30-day moving average (30-DMA) stands at just 281 BTC, with daily spikes becoming less and less frequent. This cycle contrasts sharply with the previous one (2019-2021), when inflows below 1 BTC rose continuously, reaching average monthly peaks of 2 700 BTC, nearly 10 times the current level. In early 2023, at the end of the bear market, retail activity on Binance also surged amid panic following the FTX collapse, which likely pushed some investors to sell their BTC or move it to another platform such as Binance. The average inflow then climbed to 1 900 BTC. Today, BTC trades at a valuation 5 times higher than at the bear market low, yet retail inflows are 5 times lower. The March and December 2024 tops only generated spikes of 900 to 1 200 BTC. Even though retail inflows have fallen sharply, this is not necessarily positive, as the amounts involved are now too small to influence the market. The launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, when the average was still around 1 000 BTC, is likely one of the main reasons. They offer a much simpler way to gain exposure to BTC's volatility, without the security risks of self-custody. Regulation also played a part. Tighter rules, first in the U.S. and later in Europe, made access to trading platforms more complex, steering investors toward products like ETFs. Finally, some retail investors may have changed their behavior and now prefer to hold their BTC over the long term despite price swings. A few may even use it as a means of payment, as Satoshi envisioned, but this remains anecdotal relative to overall flows.
