Elevated Leverage Ratios, Uneven Risk Across BTC and ETH
Lower prices have not erased the elevated relationship between derivatives exposure and exchange reserves on Binance. BTC’s Estimated Leverage Ratio is close to its level before the October 10, 2025 liquidation event, while ETH’s remains clearly higher. The comparison matters because a substantial price correction does not necessarily leave the market with lighter positioning. ETH shows the stronger divergence. At approximately $2,400, its price is far below the 2025 highs, yet its ELR stands near 0.69, compared with roughly 0.53–0.55 before the crash. Following several sharp resets, the ratio has repeatedly rebuilt and now remains above its 100-period moving average. The important signal is this persistence: derivatives exposure relative to reserves continues to occupy a higher range despite the deterioration in price. BTC’s picture is more balanced. Its ratio near 0.19 resembles the pre-crash reading, but the recent trend points toward moderation. ELR has retreated from the higher levels reached during 2026 and sits below its declining moving average. The historical similarity deserves attention, although the latest trajectory provides less evidence of an accelerating buildup. Together, these patterns suggest that the price correction and the adjustment in relative derivatives exposure have followed different paths. On a major derivatives venue such as Binance, that distinction matters when assessing how strongly positioning could amplify the next market move. ETH displays the clearer persistence; BTC has recently reduced its ratio. The warning would become stronger if elevated ratios coincided with growing open interest, stretched funding and weak spot liquidity. That combination would indicate that substantial exposure remains in a market with limited capacity to absorb its unwinding.
