The One Market Signal Missing From Bitcoin's Recovery: Binance Futures Dominance

Binance held between 40–44% of global USDT-margined futures volume at every month-start from October 2024 through March 2026 — through bull runs, corrections, and capitulations alike. Its lead over OKX never dropped below 18 percentage points across that entire period. May 2026 opened with Binance at 21.1% and OKX at 26.3%. The first inversion in this cycle. It traces back to a single session on April 9, when a forced deleveraging event collapsed Binance's share from 41% overnight. It has not recovered. The BTC Spot and Perpetual Futures Demand Growth metric adds the demand layer. Every genuine bull phase in this cycle — October 2024 accumulation, November 2024 breakout, May 2025 recovery — showed both the spot and futures components of 30-day demand growth positive simultaneously. Spot demand was running at +97K to +190K BTC while futures demand confirmed alongside it. That two-sided alignment is what characterized every structural move higher. The current setup has one engine running. The 30-day futures demand component is positive at +193K BTC. The 30-day spot demand component is negative at −28K BTC and has been negative for 65 consecutive days. More critically, both are now moving in the wrong direction. Futures demand peaked at +253K BTC on May 5–6 — the same days BTC tested $81K — and has since declined to +123K BTC by May 16. Spot demand deteriorated from −11K to −61K BTC across the same 11 days. Total 30-day demand fell from 232K to 62K BTC.
