BTC rejected before $80K after $1.35B hourly sell pressure while funding rates remain highly negative
As BTC was once again approaching the $80,000 level this morning, it suddenly faced a sharp correction. Within just a few hours, BTC declined by around 2.5%, sending price back below $78,000. There were no specific announcements explaining this sudden move, but the selling pressure came from the derivatives market. On Binance alone, roughly $1.2B in sell volume hit the order books within a single hour, forcing BTC to reverse course. Across all exchanges combined, BTC recorded $1.35B in selling pressure during that same hour. This highlights that when it comes to derivatives, Binance remains the primary venue where most trades are initiated. However, this is happening in a context where funding rates have remained deeply negative for several weeks. This is generally not sustainable over the long term, as shown by the chart representing cumulative 30 day funding rates. Today, the indicator has reached -7%, one of the most negative readings ever recorded. Such an extreme consensus can create short term selling pressure, as seen this morning. But over the medium term, this type of setup rarely lasts. Positions entered too late or too aggressively often turn into future buying pressure, triggering cascading liquidations that can ultimately support BTCโs next upward move.
