The Emergence of TradFi Perpetual Futures on Crypto Exchanges: The Binance Case

Crypto exchanges are becoming global venues for TradFi derivatives. The rapid rise of TradFi perpetual futures suggests that traditional market participants are increasingly using crypto exchanges to trade commodities and equities continuously, particularly during periods of strong price trends such as the recent gold and silver rallies. This trend highlights the growing convergence between traditional financial markets and crypto-native trading infrastructure. Trading activity in Binance’s TradFi perpetual futures has expanded quickly since launch, with cumulative trading volume surpassing $130 billion and 90 million trades. Notably, total volume exceeded $100 billion by February 24, just two months after launch, highlighting strong demand from traders seeking exposure to traditional assets—such as metals and equities—through crypto exchanges operating 24/7. Binance’s TradFi perpetual futures allow users to trade gold, silver, palladium, platinum, and major equities including AMZN, COIN, CIRCL, HOOD, INTC, MSTR, PLTR, and TSLA. These instruments replicate traditional derivatives exposure but benefit from25/7 trading and global accessibility of crypto exchanges. Gold and silver dominate trading activity. Daily volume is overwhelmingly concentrated in gold and silver contracts, which reached $3.77B and $3.75B respectively on March 3. Activity has spiked during periods of strong precious-metal price momentum, with record daily volumes of roughly $4B for gold and $7B for silver on January 30, 2025. In contrast, other metals and equities remain comparatively small, generating only $45M and $16M in daily volume on the same date. High trade counts reflect active trading flows. TradFi perpetual futures recorded 4.4 million trades in the most recent day, with 2.0M trades in gold and 1.9M in silver. In some periods silver surpassed gold in activity; for example, on February 2, total trades reached a record 6.3 million, including 3.7M silver trades and 2.4M gold trades.
