Ethereum Open Interest collapses by 51% on Binance : A deep market reset underway
After reaching an all time high of $12.6 billion on August 22, Ethereum’s open interest on Binance has been steadily declining. In just a little over three months it has been cut in half. Nearly $6.4 billion in derivative positions have evaporated, bringing ETH open interest on Binance down to $6.2 billion, a drop of 51%. One might think this represents a massive correction, but in reality we have only just dipped below the previous all time high of $7.7 billion. The year 2025 has been the most speculative phase ETH has ever experienced. It highlights how aggressive investors became, fueling a market structure that was far less solid and far less sustainable. And this isn’t isolated to Binance. The same pattern appears across other platforms. On Gate io, ETH open interest dropped from $5.2 billion to $3.5 billion. On Bybit, the decline is even sharper, falling from $6.1 billion to $2.3 billion. At the same time, the ongoing correction has already dragged ETH’s price down from $4830 to $2800, a decline of around 43%. In this context, the massive reduction in speculative positioning across exchanges suggests a market that is resetting more deeply than usual. Investors do not seem eager to reposition themselves right away as liquidations continue to pile up. Seeing open interest shrink this aggressively weighs on the market in the short term, yet it could help rebuild a very different market structure that might finally allow ETH to establish its bottom.
