BTC Open Interest sees the sharpest 30-Day drop of the cycle
The open interest, in BTC terms, is currently showing its strongest 30 day change of the entire cycle. Binance accounts for most of this move, with a drop of around 1.3M BTC. This not surprising given that Binance concentrates the largest trading volumes. The last time we saw such a drop was during the 2022 bear market, which highlights how significant the current cleanup really is. Bitcoin’s price correction has been ongoing for several weeks and continues to trigger liquidations. Many investors kept taking positions against the trend, mechanically contributing to the contraction in open interest. Part of this decline may also be attributed to investors who prefer to capitulate and either close their positions or reduce their risk exposure. Historically, these cleansing phases have often been essential to forming a solid bottom and setting the stage for a renewed bullish trend. Deleveraging, forced closures of overly optimistic positions and a gradual decline in speculative exposure help rebalance the market. It is worth noting that this cycle has been heavily driven by leverage and record futures activity. Total open interest reached an all time high of around $47.5 B, highlighting just how aggressively traders were positioned. Such elevated speculative intensity is rarely a sign of a healthy market. It creates conditions ripe for excess, instability, and sharp corrections when liquidity shifts, which is exactly what we are seeing today.
