Coinbase premium gap at -$90 : A shift in market power.

The Coinbase Premium Gap has just dropped to -$90, one of its lowest levels of the year. The last time we saw such a strong negative gap was in February 2025, when the indicator fell to -$138 during a period where institutional investors were already pulling back. This indicator is interesting because it helps identify which type of investor is actually driving the Bitcoin price. It compares the spot price on Coinbase Pro, a platform mainly used by professionals, institutional desks and large wallets, with the price on Binance, the most accessible exchange and therefore heavily used by retail investors. In a healthy bullish market supported by strong capital, the premium is usually positive, showing that institutions are actively buying BTC. When the premium turns highly negative, like today with -$90, it means the price action is mostly driven by Binance users, so by retails, while professionals prefer to hedge, reduce exposure or stay on the sidelines. A persistently negative premium suggests that the market is being driven by more emotional investors who react quickly to volatility and panic. This can increase selling pressure and make corrections more severe until institutions step back in. This dynamic needs to be monitored closely to anticipate any potential trend reversal.
