Bitcoin’s Violent Wick Triggers Nearly $2B Liquidation, The Largest Leverage Flush Since May 2021

On October 10, the cryptocurrency market witnessed one of its largest forced liquidation events since May 19, 2021. The trigger was not a simple price drop but a violent and rapid crash in Bitcoin’s price. After trading at the $121,000 level, the price plummeted to a low of $102,000, creating a massive downward wick before finding support and closing the period around $112,000. This extreme volatility triggered a devastating cascade effect, leading to the wipeout of $1.05 billion in Bitcoin long positions and $900 million in Ethereum. This event once again highlighted the market's vulnerability to high leverage. A noteworthy aspect of this event’s analysis is the distribution of liquidation volume across different exchanges. Contrary to expectations, the Gate.io exchange became the epicenter of this flush, recording $480 million in Bitcoin liquidations and $370 million in Ethereum. It single-handedly accounted for a massive portion of the total market liquidations. This unexpectedly high volume indicates a severe concentration of leveraged long positions on this particular platform. In second place was the Binance exchange, with $175 million in Bitcoin and $160 million in Ethereum liquidations. Although this figure is significant, when compared to Binance’s massive market share, it shows that the concentration of leverage risk was far higher on Gate.io. This event serves as a crucial reminder of how extreme intraday volatility, not just a steady price decline, can rapidly escalate into a liquidity crisis in the presence of high leverage. Traders and analysts must pay close attention not only to broad market metrics but also to the distribution of risk and leverage volume across different exchanges, as it has been demonstrated that a single exchange can trigger a major market-wide event. This leverage flush, while painful, could pave the way for a healthier and more sustainable market movement in the near future.
