Analysis of the Correlation Between BTC ETF and Bitcoin Price: Recent Trends and Changes in Fund Behavior

Since the launch of the BTC ETF, the German investment fund ETC Group Physical Bitcoin (BTCE) has been reducing its positions day by day. The BTCE has always had a strong correlation with Bitcoin price movements; for example, since 2020, when its positions increased from 0 to 23,480 BTC, this coincided with the first historical peak in April 2021. Moreover, when its BTC reserves began to decline, the price of Bitcoin also fell in most cases. However, since January 2024, its reserves have been decreasing from the maximum value of 27,980 BTC and are currently below 17,000 BTC. In other words, the ETC Group has been reducing its positions daily, but this time the correlation with the Bitcoin price has not been as significant as in previous periods. By adding a 30-day variance analysis, we observed that positive variations are linked to an increase in BTC price, while negative variations are generally associated with a decrease in price and local lows. The exception is the most recent movement, where Bitcoin rose while the fund continued to liquidate its positions and has been doing so since then. Conclusion: The historical correlation between BTCE and the Bitcoin price has shown a consistent pattern, where changes in the fund’s reserves generally precede movements in BTC price. However, the recent behavior of the fund suggests a change in this pattern. The continued reduction in BTCE reserves has not translated into significant changes in Bitcoin price as expected. This discrepancy may indicate shifts in market dynamics or other influences that warrant a deeper analysis. Monitoring the fund's evolution and the impact of these changes on Bitcoin's price will be crucial to better understand new correlations and market patterns.
