The MVRV Gap in Ethereum Reveals the Strength of Staking Holders

Since July 20, 2025, a clear gap has emerged in the Market Value to Realized Value (MVRV) ratio between Ethereum’s staking holders and those in the circulating supply. Before that date, both groups showed a value of 1.5, meaning unrealized gains of about 50% relative to their average cost basis. Since then, a progressive divergence has developed between the two groups in terms of unrealized profits. As the price of ETH rises, unrealized gains increase as well—particularly among stakers, who have outperformed the general supply in this metric. Recent data as of October 28: ETH MVRV (circulating supply): 1.5 ETH MVRV (staking): 1.7 Interpreting the DivergenceA higher MVRV of 1.7 in staked ETH indicates that Ethereum stakers hold greater unrealized profits—around 20% more than the circulating supply—as they tend to lock their tokens for long periods to act as validators and earn protocol rewards. This group demonstrates stronger conviction in Ethereum and lower selling pressure, forming a more patient and committed base of holders. Meanwhile, circulating ETH with an MVRV of 1.5 represents tokens that are more exposed to profit-taking should market conditions turn favorable. Currently, there are 36.1 million ETH staked compared to 121.12 million ETH in circulation. The amount of ETH locked in validators continues to grow gradually, adding solidity to the network, while the liquid supply remains relatively stable—regulated by Ethereum’s burn mechanism, which helps offset inflation. ConclusionNaturally, there tends to be a 10–20% difference between the MVRV of staked ETH and that of the circulating supply. This reflects a healthy market structure: Stakers act as anchors of stability within the ecosystem. Circulating ETH remains in a balanced valuation zone with moderate unrealized gains. This divergence serves as both a behavioral signal for holders and an early indicator of strength in the current market cycle. by Carmelo Alemán, Verified On-Chain Analyst
