Bitcoin Options Charge 36.8% Volatility for 21.4% Delivered; Realized Caught Up 1 in 16 Times
Bitcoin options for the November 27 expiry on Deribit are pricing 36.82% implied volatility against 21.42% delivered over the last 30 days. Our Options Cost Score sits at 99.0, the 99th percentile of 400 days. In 16 distinct episodes since 2021-03-24 with OCS between 90 and 100, 30-day realized vol finished above the implied vol charged on entry 1 times (6.2%). That is not a promise of calm. Options usually cost more than they deliver: across 1620 days, DVOL priced more volatility than the next 30 days delivered on 73.9% of them, by a median 10.6 vol points. How the gap opened: the Binance exploit lifted implied volatility, and option sellers have not handed that premium back. Spot has drifted lower rather than lurched. 30-day realized volatility at 21.43 is lower than on 99% of days since 2021-03-24. Futures traders are not stepping back. CryptoQuant's all-exchange Open Interest reads $26.07 billion on the latest bar, up from about $25.6 billion on 29 October, while BTC slid from roughly $81,000 to $77,119. Positions are being added into the decline, not closed. Bitcoin options are charging for a storm the spot market has not delivered. What reverses this: 30-day realized volatility climbing above 36.8% before the November 27 expiry, or a move larger than the 5.13% options price for the 6 to 13 November window around Friday's payrolls report. The other side: if implied volatility drifts toward 30% while open interest keeps rising, the premium is fading without the market ever cashing it.
