Bitcoin’s Biggest Holders Are Building Exposure Into the Recovery

Bitcoin’s recovery is gaining support from larger holders, but the timing of their accumulation is what matters. Total Whale Holdings, excluding exchange and mining pool addresses, have risen from roughly 2.94 million BTC in late August to almost 3.00 million BTC at the latest reading. That represents an estimated net increase of 60,000 BTC, or around 2%, taking balances to their highest levels shown this year. The increase was not continuous. Holdings softened during September before accelerating sharply in late September and early October. Whale balance expansion therefore followed the initial price recovery, suggesting larger holders increased exposure as the rebound developed rather than clearly anticipating its launch. This changes the interpretation of the rally. Rising balances alongside a stronger price structure are consistent with supply absorption: large holders appear willing to retain more BTC after prices have already recovered. If sustained, that behavior can help absorb profit-taking from this and other cohorts and support the transition from a rebound to a more durable advance. The rising 30-day average reinforces the shift beyond the latest daily jump. However, balances have eased slightly from their recent peak. The next test is whether whales retain these additions through price consolidation. Abrupt balance changes can also reflect wallet restructuring or cohort migration, so holdings alone do not establish executed spot purchases. What to Watch Continued balance growth during pullbacks, alongside stronger spot demand and contained whale-to-exchange inflows, would strengthen the accumulation thesis.
