Bitcoin Speculators Turn Defensive After $87K Push as Binance Open Interest Drops $500M
Bitcoin’s pullback from roughly $87,000 to $84,000 was limited to around 3.4%, but the reaction among leveraged derivatives speculators on Binance was considerably stronger. Between September 21 and September 23, Bitcoin open interest on Binance fell from approximately $5.4 billion to $4.9 billion, removing about $500 million in outstanding positions, or roughly 9.3%. At the same time, CVD dropped from nearly $3 billion to $1.48 billion, a decline of about 51%. The combination of falling price, falling open interest and weakening CVD suggests a notable deterioration in speculative sentiment. Traders who had been increasing leveraged exposure during Bitcoin’s push toward $87,000 appear to have shifted toward a more defensive stance as the rally lost momentum. Rather than continuing to chase the upside, leveraged speculators began closing positions, reducing leverage and cutting risk exposure. The pattern is consistent with late longs retreating after the failed push above $87,000, while confidence in an immediate continuation of the rally weakened. The scale of that behavioral shift stands out relative to the price move itself. Bitcoin declined only about 3.4%, while open interest contracted by more than 9% and CVD fell by roughly half. This suggests that speculative sentiment weakened much faster than Bitcoin’s price, with derivatives traders moving from aggressive upside positioning toward caution and increasingly pessimistic behavior. For now, the data points to a clear leverage washout and retreat of late longs, showing that leveraged speculators have become substantially less willing to bet on an immediate extension of Bitcoin’s rally.
