The Great Divergence: Bitcoin Buyers Show Resilience While Ethereum Sellers Take Control
Despite the recent correction in the crypto market, on-chain data reveals a crucial divergence in trading behavior between Bitcoin and Ethereum. While both assets have experienced price declines—Bitcoin dropping from $82,000 (May 11) to $77,000, and Ethereum sliding from $2,400 (April 18) to $2,100—their underlying demand structures tell contrasting stories. Bitcoin continues to exhibit notable resilience. Although its 30-day moving average of Net Taker Volume has cooled from a robust +$243 million in April to +$58 million by May 18, it remains firmly in positive territory. This indicates that despite the price dip, aggressive buyer demand persists, and takers are actively absorbing the selling pressure. Conversely, Ethereum is flashing structural weakness. After peaking in early March, ETH’s Net Taker Volume has plummeted, entirely shifting into the red zone and hitting -$113 million by May 17. This negative transition highlights aggressive taker selling and a distinct lack of buying appetite at current support levels. Conclusion: This stark divergence suggests a potential capital rotation or a clear market preference for holding Bitcoin over Ethereum in the current environment. While BTC buyers are successfully defending price levels, ETH sellers have taken full control of the asset’s momentum. Market participants should monitor whether Ethereum’s weakness acts as a leading indicator for further broader market drops, or if Bitcoin’s underlying strength will eventually pull the rest of the market back up.
