Bitcoin Futures have reached record dominance at 5x Spot Volume

The rise of the futures market has been spectacular throughout this cycle. Binance notably saw Bitcoin futures open interest reach a new all time high at $14.77B. This is a colossal figure when compared to the previous 2021 peak of $5.7B. With the increase in BTC price, the notional value of positions held in futures had then reached nearly three times the valuation seen back then. The dominance of the derivatives market has expanded significantly and now represents a major share of overall market activity, while the spot market continues to gradually lose importance. So far, 2026 appears to be following the exact same trend. The spot-to-futures volume ratio on Binance has now fallen to 0.18, the lowest level recorded since futures were introduced on the platform, matching the extreme levels previously seen in 2021. This means futures trading volumes are now more than 5 times larger than spot volumes. In other words, for every $1 invested into Bitcoin spot markets on Binance, roughly $5 are flowing directly into futures markets. This imbalance between spot and derivatives makes the market far more unstable and increasingly sensitive to price movements in both directions. It is also one of the factors behind the October 10 event, when the market experienced the largest liquidation cascade in its history.
