Every Altcoin Cycle Leaves the Previous One Behind

Across every cohort from 2020 to 2024, altcoins are structurally underwater over the last 90 days, clustering between roughly -18% and -23%. Meanwhile, the 2025 cohort of newly listed altcoins is holding positive ground (~+5%). In other words, the market doesn’t reward persistence but rewards immediacy. This dynamic reframes how we should think about “altcoin seasons.” It’s not a broad-based expansion where all assets rise together. It’s a selective, forward-looking process where capital chases what’s new, liquid, and socially amplified. Survivorship exists, but it’s the exception, not the rule. The second chart adds another layer: where this attention concentrates. Across all major exchanges, new altcoin listings over the last 90 days are in the red almost universally: - Deribit -40.1% - Bitmex -23% - OKX -22.4% - Coinbase -16.8% - Bybit -6.1% - Binance closes at +6.58% 🟢 Binance operates as the central hub of altcoin price discovery. It combines the deepest liquidity, the fastest listing pipeline, and the highest concentration of active traders. When a new asset is listed there, it doesn’t just gain access to capital, it gains visibility, narrative velocity, and immediate participation. Altcoins are not competing on long-term fundamentals as much as they are competing for short-term relevance. And Binance is where that competition is most efficiently priced. Whether the 2025 cohort can defend positive territory through the next BTC volatility event will determine if this structural edge holds, or if the attention cycle simply resets again.
