75% of ETH on Binance Is Leveraged

Ethereum leverage on Binance has not only recovered after the October 10th market-wide deleveraging event, it has pushed to new highs, making Binance the only major exchange where this metric has fully expanded beyond previous levels. This is a critical signal. Despite the recent systemic reset, traders continue to concentrate leveraged exposure on Binance, suggesting strong confidence in the venue as the primary hub for ETH derivatives positioning. This also reflects a structurally leveraged market environment, where price discovery is increasingly dictated by futures positioning rather than organic spot demand. The Estimated Leverage Ratio (ELR), which measures open interest relative to exchange reserves, shows that over 75% of ETH exposure on Binance is now leveraged. In parallel, Binance holds roughly 3% of total ETH supply (~3.4M ETH). Importantly, this expansion in leverage has occurred rapidly and with little consolidation. This suggests that a significant portion of ETH’s recent upside has been driven by derivatives flows rather than sustained spot demand. Markets dominated by leverage tend to behave differently. They can extend trends aggressively, but they also become increasingly fragile. When positioning builds this quickly, it often creates crowded conditions where even small catalysts can trigger liquidations and sharp reversals. In this context, the signal is clear: leverage is leading the move, not following it. That typically supports continuation in the short term, but also raises the probability of volatility spikes and forced deleveraging. Short-term implication: caution is warranted.
