Binance open interest drops 25% as traders deleverage amid rising uncertainty

Whether looking at macroeconomic developments or geopolitical tensions, this was clearly not a period encouraging risk-taking, and many investors appear to have understood that. Concerns about persistent inflation, combined with the intensification of the U.S.–Iran conflict, have only added to the uncertainty surrounding the current environment. This growing risk aversion can be observed by analyzing the open interest on Binance, which represents the largest derivatives market in terms of volume. Since the beginning of the year, open interest has declined from 130,800 BTC to 97,680 BTC, a decrease of roughly 25%. In addition, the Estimated Leverage Ratio on Binance also reflects a far more cautious stance from investors today. This indicator measures derivatives activity by comparing open interest to BTC reserves, providing insight into how aggressively traders are using leverage. The weekly average has just fallen to 0.146, compared with 0.155 for the monthly average, marking the lowest level observed since the April 2025 correction. The 0.15 threshold is particularly noteworthy. Each time the ratio dropped below this level during the current cycle, it signaled a period of excessive deleveraging in the market. This risk aversion that has been building over the past several weeks appears logical given the broader macro and geopolitical context. However, it is now starting to reach levels that may represent potential opportunities for more aggressive traders looking to position against the prevailing trend
