Ethereum Network Activity Surges to 2-Year High

The Ethereum network has witnessed a remarkable spike in activity as 2025 draws to a close. On December 29, the Transfer Count (Total) surged to 1.06 million, marking its highest level since October 2023. As shown in the chart, this metric (purple line) has been exhibiting high volatility throughout Q4 2025, breaking away from the relatively stable consolidation phase seen in mid-year. While the price of ETH (black line) has corrected significantly from its yearly highs above $4.5K to around $2.9K, the explosive growth in transfer count suggests a divergence between market value and on-chain utility. Typically, a spike in transfer counts during a price downtrend can indicate two scenarios: panic selling/capitulation or renewed interest in on-chain activities (such as DeFi or NFT mints) due to lower gas fees. The sheer magnitude of this spike—surpassing all 2024 and 2025 peaks—suggests intense on-chain velocity. Investors should monitor if this increased throughput translates into a price reversal or if it signals a final distribution phase.
