ETF Flow Impact Score (EFIS): Quantifying Institutional Bitcoin Demand
Since January 2024, institutional capital through spot Bitcoin ETFs has become the dominant price driver. After analyzing 663 days of flow data across all 11 US ETFs, I developed EFIS—a quantitative model measuring how institutional flows translate into price. The methodology solves a critical problem: absolute dollar flows don't account for market growth. A $200M inflow was 10% of total AUM in early 2024 but only 0.8% today. EFIS normalizes flows by Assets Under Management, creating time-consistent measurement. The model applies an optimized coefficient to cumulative normalized flows. Data shows flows exceeding 1% of daily AUM correlate with 2-3% price moves within one week. Current ETF holdings: 1,047,000 BTC. The model achieves sub-10% prediction errors during stable periods. As of today, EFIS predicts BTC at $88,000 based on current institutional flow patterns—a notable divergence from spot price that warrants attention. EFIS delivers three capabilities no other metric provides. First, it quantifies the capital-price relationship through AUM adjustment. Second, it generates price predictions with confidence intervals, revealing when actual price diverges from positioning. Third, it flags regime changes—sustained outflows above 0.5% daily AUM preceded every major correction. How to use: Monitor normalized flow percentage versus model predictions. Five consecutive days of positive flows while price lags model by 10%+ indicates institutional accumulation outpacing market. Price exceeding model during negative flows signals distribution. Updates daily with official ETF data—institutional positioning unavailable elsewhere. Context: EFIS isolates ETF demand as one component. Macro liquidity and sentiment remain primary drivers. Specialized institutional flow tool, not comprehensive prediction.
