Bitcoin’s Quiet Network: The Decline in Active Addresses Reveals Retail’s Retreat

Active addresses in Bitcoin are one of the most relevant metrics in On-Chain analysis, as they reflect the level of real network usage and adoption. In simple terms, an active address is any address that sends or receives BTC within a given period (usually one day). This indicator helps evaluate economic participation within the blockchain, beyond price movements or speculation. Aside from its technical definition, data from the past year reveals a striking trend: despite Bitcoin reaching several new all-time highs (ATHs), the number of active addresses has been steadily declining. 📉(see chart) At the beginning of November 2024, active addresses were around 1.18 million, while as of October 30, 2025, they stand at 872,000, representing a 26.1% decrease. What’s behind this drop in network activity? This gradual decline suggests a lower participation from retail investors. Small investors are interacting less with the network, and this absence is clearly reflected in other metrics, such as transaction fees. Fees have fallen from $8.44 on November 1, 2024, to just $0.56 on October 30, 2025. (see chart) When fees drop this low, it means that Bitcoin blocks are only partially filled, implying insufficient demand for block space. During periods of high retail participation, blocks are typically full, transactions compete for confirmation, and fees spike. However, under current conditions, the low cost reflects a calmer network dominated by institutional actors and long-term holders. The temporary disappearance of retail is the result of ongoing liquidations and the prolonged decline in altcoin prices over the past year and a half. Many small investors have capitulated, reducing their activity within the ecosystem. The absence of retail investors limits visible network activity and delays the natural end of a market cycle. Retail provides the emotional push and liquidity for strong hands to exit positions profitably, and without it, cycles extend longer than usual.
