LTH vs STH Whales: Calmness vs Aggressiveness
The term whales is widely used in the cryptocurrency ecosystem to describe wallets holding more than 1,000 BTC. However, from an On-Chain perspective, it is crucial to distinguish between two key categories that reveal different market behaviors: LTH Whales (Long Term Holders): wallets that keep their BTC for more than 155 days, typically linked to strategic accumulation and lower selling pressure. STH Whales (Short Term Holders): wallets that hold BTC for less than 155 days, usually associated with speculative moves and short-term circulating supply. LTH Whales tend to act calmly, avoiding excessive reactions to market swings, especially during moderate declines. In contrast, STH Whales show a more aggressive profile, taking advantage of pullbacks to reposition and lower their average cost, adding volatility to the short term. These two behaviors become clear when analyzing their Realized Prices (average purchase price) and holdings (see On-Chain charts). Currently, STH Whales have a Realized Price of $111,299 with holdings of about 1.0705M BTC, while LTH Whales show a much lower Realized Price of around $41,887, holding close to 3.72M BTC. STH Whales are often institutions, companies, or other new entrants to Bitcoin. Because they hold BTC at higher average costs, their market behavior tends to be more aggressive. While wallets exceeding 155 days move into the LTH category, new STH Whales keep entering the market, repeating this aggressive pattern and adding continuous short-term pressure. Conclusion: The distinction between LTH and STH Whales is key because their different behaviors directly impact market volatility. When STH Whales become more active, their higher cost basis often translates into sharper short-term moves. In contrast, the steady accumulation of LTH Whales provides stability and price support.
