Ethereum’s Outlook: Citi Analysts Stay Cautious, On-Chain Data Signals Strength

Reuters reported that Citigroup has set a year-end 2025 price target of $4,300 for Ethereum. At first glance, this looks conservative—especially since ETH recently reached an all-time high of $4,955 just last month. Citi’s cautious stance reflects a desire to account for macroeconomic uncertainty, regulatory headwinds, and the possibility of market corrections after a strong rally. But the on-chain data tells a different story. Staking Inflows Rising CryptoQuant data shows Ethereum staking inflows have surged to near-record levels in recent months. Investors are consistently locking up ETH, reducing liquid supply and signaling long-term conviction. This steady demand for staking yield makes Citi’s $4,300 projection look more like a downside cushion than a fair reflection of network growth. Exchange Reserves at Multi-Year Lows At the same time, ETH balances on centralized exchanges have been in continuous decline since 2020, recently hitting fresh multi-year lows. With less ETH available for immediate sale, supply pressure is weakening, which historically coincides with bullish price action. Taken together, these metrics suggest that Ethereum’s fundamentals are stronger than Citi’s baseline case implies. While large institutions often prefer to err on the side of caution, many analysts now argue for $6,000–$7,000 by year-end 2025 if current trends in staking, tokenization, and stablecoin adoption continue. The real story may be that Citi’s $4,300 target is not an ambitious forecast—but rather a conservative floor in a market increasingly supported by robust on-chain demand.
