MVRV and Whale Ratio: How Bitcoin Reacts to Fed Easing

Federal Reserve rate cuts have repeatedly left a mark on Bitcoin’s market structure. Two on-chain indicators—MVRV and Whale Ratio—are especially useful to understand these shifts. MVRV reflects the overall valuation of the market, showing whether Bitcoin is broadly overvalued or undervalued. Whale Ratio measures the dominance of large holders on exchange flows, capturing when whales exert selling or buying pressure. In March 2020, as the Fed slashed rates to near zero in response to the pandemic, MVRV collapsed toward 1. This meant that Bitcoin’s market value was barely above realized value, with most speculative gains erased. Yet as the Fed’s liquidity injections filtered through global markets, MVRV rebounded sharply. Within months, it climbed toward overheated levels around 3–4, signaling that risk appetite had returned and fueling the bull run of 2020–2021. At the same time, the Whale Ratio spiked right after the cuts. Whales were sending coins to exchanges, increasing selling pressure during the panic. But as conditions stabilized, the ratio declined, showing that large holders were withdrawing coins and shifting toward accumulation. This behavioral turn aligned with Bitcoin’s price bottom and subsequent rally. The late 2024 easing cycle showed the same rhythm. MVRV hovered near 2, suggesting the market still had room to grow without being excessively overheated. As liquidity expectations rose, the ratio gradually trended higher, reflecting renewed optimism. Meanwhile, the Whale Ratio again rose around the announcement, indicating short-term selling. Soon after, it fell back as whales reduced exchange activity, clearing the path for Bitcoin to push toward new highs despite ongoing macro uncertainty. Together, these indicators highlight how Fed easing brings short turbulence but sets the stage for rallies. MVRV shows valuation, while Whale Ratio signals when whales shift from selling to buying. Watching both helps spot the turn from volatility to upside.
