Coinbase Premium Signals Signs of Recovery Amid Market Turmoil, While Korea Premium Index Remains Lagging
As the U.S.-China trade tensions escalate, global risk asset markets are experiencing significant turbulence. In this environment, gold prices have surged rapidly, reflecting a flight to safety. Bitcoin has also undergone a steep correction of over -30%, yet it has managed to avoid further downside and is now forming a solid support base with a modest rebound. Since the beginning of the prolonged correction in March 2024, the Coinbase Premium has displayed a pattern of compressing highs and lows, gradually tightening the gap between positive and negative values. This was followed by a sharp rise in buying activity on Coinbase, causing the premium to spike and Bitcoin’s price to surge. Currently, we are observing a similar pattern—lower highs and higher lows—suggesting the potential for renewed upward momentum. In contrast, the Korea Premium Index showed a consistent downtrend throughout the 2024 correction period and only surged after Bitcoin’s price had already rallied. This lagging behavior implies that Korean retail investors were late to respond and less engaged compared to other cycles. This divergence highlights that current market direction is largely driven by U.S.-based activity on platforms like Coinbase, while interest from Korean investors appears muted. As such, when analyzing Bitcoin’s potential price action, the Coinbase Premium can serve as a valuable leading indicator, while the Korea Premium Index may be better utilized as a lagging one. Although overall market conditions remain unstable, the upward trend in the Coinbase Premium’s lows indicates healthy demand. This bodes well for a potentially strong mid- to long-term recovery in Bitcoin’s price trajectory.
