Could the recent Bitcoin drop be caused by the ATH of Bitcoin Open Interest? Bitcoin Open Interest is the total number of open futures contracts (including both long and short positions) on a derivatives exchange. Historically, when Open Interest (OI) has reached above $13 billion, we have seen significant corrections. Investors experienced this twice (in 2021) when the Bitcoin price reached $64K and $69K, and Open Interest exceeded $13 billion. We might be experiencing the third instance of this phenomenon right now. Conclusion: The liquidation of overly accumulated leveraged positions in both directions (long and short) can be necessary for a healthy uptrend to continue. As Open Interest increases, it indicates more liquidity, volatility, and attention are coming into the derivatives market. The increasing OI trend can support the current ongoing price trend. In other words, an increase in OI doesn't always signal negativity. However, liquidations are inevitable after an excessive amount of positions accumulate. Thanks for reading.
