XRP Ledger: Open Interest

Chart Description

Open Interest measures the total number of active derivative positions - both long and short - currently open on a given exchange or across the market, serving as a real-time indicator of capital commitment and speculative activity in the futures and perpetuals market.

When Open Interest rises, more capital is entering the derivatives market and existing positions are being held rather than closed - typically associated with increasing liquidity, heightened volatility potential, and growing conviction in the prevailing price trend. A sustained increase in OI alongside a trending price move reinforces that trend, as it reflects genuine position-building rather than short-term noise.

When Open Interest declines, participants are closing positions - either taking profit, cutting losses, or reducing exposure. Significant OI drops can precede or follow sharp price moves, as sudden reductions in open positions increase the risk of cascading liquidations. A heavily leveraged market with declining OI can become unstable in either direction, where a modest price move triggers outsized reactions through long or short squeezes.
