Bitcoin: Net Realized Profit and Loss (NRPL)

Chart Description

Net Realized Profit/Loss (NRPL) measures the net magnitude of profit or loss actually realized by all market participants spending coins within a given period, calculated by comparing the price at which each spent output is moved to the price at which it was last transacted. Unlike unrealized metrics that reflect paper gains and losses, NRPL captures economic value that has been concretely locked in through on-chain activity.

When NRPL is strongly positive, participants are collectively realizing significant profits - historically associated with bull market distribution phases where holders are actively selling into strength and locking in gains. Sustained high positive readings indicate that the market is absorbing significant realized profit, which over time can exhaust buying pressure and precede trend reversals. When NRPL turns sharply negative, participants are realizing losses at scale - a condition associated with capitulation events where holders can no longer sustain underwater positions and exit regardless of price.

Tracked alongside NUPL and SOPR, NRPL bridges the gap between unrealized positioning and actual market behavior - providing a real-time view of whether the profit and loss dynamics visible in on-chain cost basis data are translating into concrete selling or capitulation activity, and helping identify inflection points where realized flows are large enough to influence broader market structure.
