Bitcoin: Funding Rates

Chart Description

Funding Rates are periodic payments exchanged between long and short traders in perpetual swap markets, mechanically anchoring perpetual contract prices to spot price by incentivizing the less dominant side of the market. The payment amount is proportional to position size, creating a continuous cost or yield for leveraged participants depending on market positioning.

When funding rates are positive, long positions are dominant - traders holding long are paying shorts to maintain their positions, reflecting bullish sentiment and a perpetual price trading at a premium to spot. Persistently high positive funding indicates an overleveraged long market, historically a contrarian warning sign as the cost of maintaining longs increases and the market becomes vulnerable to long squeezes. When funding rates are negative, shorts are dominant and paying longs - reflecting bearish sentiment and conditions that can precipitate short squeezes if price moves upward unexpectedly.

CryptoQuant captures funding rates at minute-level granularity - significantly more precise than the standard 8-hour settlement intervals used by exchanges - providing a real-time view of sentiment shifts in the perpetual swaps market that coarser data would obscure.
