Bitcoin: Long Liquidations

Chart Description

Long Liquidations measures the total value of forced long position closures in the derivatives market within a given period, capturing the scale of involuntary selling that occurs when leveraged long positions breach their maintenance margin threshold and are automatically closed by the exchange.

When long liquidations spike, it indicates a rapid price decline has forced leveraged longs out of their positions - releasing a surge of synthetic selling pressure into the market. This can trigger cascading liquidation events, commonly referred to as a long squeeze, where each wave of forced closures drives price lower and initiates the next round of liquidations across increasingly margined positions. Monitoring the scale and velocity of long liquidations in real time is critical for identifying when a price decline may be mechanically amplified beyond what fundamental selling pressure alone would produce.

Elevated long liquidation events frequently mark local price bottoms - once the most overleveraged positions are flushed, the mechanical selling pressure subsides and the market finds a cleaner base from which to recover.
